Hyphema is usually caused by eye trauma due to sports injuries, home or workplace accidents, and falls. Hyphema can also be caused by other, less common things, including:
• Abnormal blood vessels on the surface of the iris (the colored part of the eye)
• Eye infections caused by a herpes virus
• Blood clotting problems;
• Intraocular lens problems (artificial lens implants)
• Cancers of the eye

Because most hyphemas are due to sports injuries, it is important to wear appropriate eye protection. If you injure your eye, see an ophthalmologist (Eye M.D.) immediately for an examination. Even if you do not have an eye injury but notice a collection of blood on your iris, see your Eye M.D. immediately.
