Will Vomiting Loosen My Intraocular Lens?
MAR 31, 2014
Question:
I am getting laser cataract surgery. I have gastroesophageal reflux disease (or GERD, a condition where acid and contents from the stomach goes back into the throat) so I'm always vomiting. Will vomiting every 3 hours loosen the newly implanted intraocular lens?
Answer:
First let me comment that vomiting every three hours can't be good for you and I would make an appointment with a gastroenterologist who can help you with this problem. That being said, you will not have anything to eat or drink prior to surgery and that is likely to reduce your need to throw up. It is greatly preferred that you not vomit following cataract surgery, however, this would likely not loosen the intraocular lens. I urge you to communicate your concerns with your ophthalmologist.
