Cataract Surgery and Blood Thinness
AUG 31, 2015
Question:
My mother-in-law can't have cataract operations until her blood is thinner. Why is this?
Answer:
I don’t know. I perform cataract surgery on patients who remain on blood thinners whenever a patient’s general practitioner or cardiologist suggests that their risk profile for a stroke or myocardial infarction (heart attack) is too high to stop their blood thinning medications. Perhaps there is a complicating factor about your mother-in-law’s situation that makes her case more complex. I would suggest she ask her ophthalmologist about this.
