What is the best way to remove mature cataract?
MAY 16, 2015
Question:
What would be the recommend way to remove a hyper-mature/dense cataract in a patient over 75 years old? Does a successful outcome depend more on the skill of the surgeon or the method of removing the cataract?
Answer:
A hypermature cataract is one which has turned white and may be filled with liquefaction of the lens. This cataract surgery has a significantly higher incidence of complication than regular cataract surgery (which is about 98% successful). The success of surgery does depend on both the skill of the surgeon and the method of removal of the cataract. One surgeon might advise that his/her best results are derived from standard phacoemulsification (Phaco) surgery, while another might advise that his/her best results come from Femto Laser-assisted Phaco surgery, and yet another might advise that his/her best results come from the old extra capsular cataract surgery. I advise a detailed, thorough conversation with your ophthalmologist.
