Question:
My son was using the weed trimmer and a rock hit his eye. I think it hit his eyelid and it caused the eye to dilate—will this be all right? He says he can see fine.
Answer:
Your story is very concerning. Assuming that your child's pupils were of equal size prior to the injury, and assuming you are indicating that the pupil of the injured eye is now dilated so that it is larger than the fellow eye, a serious injury could have been caused when the rock hit your son's eye. Trauma that is severe enough to disrupt the inside of the eye can cause bleeding inside the eye, glaucoma, cataracts and a host of other serious problems. A serious problem can be present even if his vision seems fine. A visit to your child's ophthalmologist is a logical next step.
