Is it really important to see an eye doctor about my tear-drop shaped pupil?

Question:
My family doctor noticed that my right pupil is not round. It is more tear-drop shaped. She recommended I see an eye doctor. Is it necessary that I see an eye doctor?
Answer:
Yes. If your family doctor recommended you see an eye doctor, I would set up the visit. A number of things can cause the pupil to become irregular. It could also be congenital (something you were born with), such as a coloboma (when tissue around the eye is missing at birth). Some of these causes are harmless but some can be very serious. So getting a complete eye exam with an ophthalmologist is important to rule out the serious causes and to find out if there are any other associated findings in the eye or in your body.
