Question:
My daughter has bumps on the edge of eyelid by her eyelashes. At first the bumps would come out and go back in. Now they have been on the edge of her eye lid for a long time. They look like they are full of pus, but there is no pus in the bumps. Help me please.
Answer:
From your description of your daughter's eyelid bumps, it seems most likely that these bumps are chalazia — plugged oil glands near the edge of the eyelid which fill up with thick oily material that can resemble pus. A chalazion can be short-lived or it can persist for a long time; in either case it is a benign condition that is due to inflammation rather than infection. Less likely would be styes — localized bacterial infections of the eyelids. Even less likely would be a virus infection of the skin of the eyelids called molluscum contagiosum. If the bumps persist, take your daughter to an ophthalmologist for diagnosis and possible treatment.
