Is Cross Linking a Safe Treatment in Keratoconus?
DEC 09, 2010
Question:
Is cross linking a safe treatment in keratoconus?
Answer:
Cross linking is an interesting new treatment for keratoconus, but it is not yet approved by the FDA in this country. The treatment is currently undergoing trials at selected centers. It is a non-surgical treatment that is designed to stop the progression of keratoconus but does little if anything to restore the normal corneal curvature. Your question regarding safety is difficult to answer. It appears to be safe so far, but there is little experience in this country. So, preliminarily, I can say that it appears to be safe here and abroad, but long term studies are simply not available - yet.
