Question: My son woke up with not being able to open his right eye without pain. What is the best way to flush out his eye? Do I put cold or warm cloths on it for pain? What is the best way to look for something in the eye He says the pain is in the upper left corner, which indicates there is something in it. But he does sleep in his contacts also. He usually has no pain from them. Answer: The first thing to do is remove his contact lenses. Then, look at your son's contact lenses to be sure a piece has not broken off of one lens. To look at the eye, and to make it accessible for flushing it out, pull the lower eyelid down with a fingertip placed just above the cheekbone while he is looking upwards, and then pull the upper eyelid up with a thumbtip placed just below the eyebrow while he is looking downward. Bright room light or a flashlight is needed to inspect the eye. To flush out an eye, sterilize a clean teacup by filling it with boiling water for a few minutes; then let the cup cool before filling it with running tap water; then pour the water into the eye while pulling the eyelids up and down as above. Wet cloths will not have a beneficial effect in case there is an injury or foreign body in the eye. If his pain persists, he should see an Eye M.D. promptly.
