Question:
I ride dirt bikes for recreation. After riding for ten or so minutes, I start to lose depth perception, and see double. I can't tell how deep the hole is, or how high the bump is. It can be quite trying and I'm afraid I will hurt myself. I am 54 years old, My eye doctor said the muscles attached to the eye might be weakening do to age. Is there anything I can do to cure this?

Answer:
In all likelihood, the double vision you are experiencing is from an imbalance of the muscles that move your eyes. Depth perception requires that the two eyes see a slightly dissimilar image at the same time; but your eyes are drifting apart so much that your brain cannot put the images together. Depending upon the degree of muscle imbalance and the cause of the imbalance, your Eye M.D. may prescribe eyeglasses with prisms to move the images together, or he/she may recommend corrective surgery.
