Why does my grandchild watch TV using just one eye?
NOV 23, 2010
Question:
My 8 year-old granddaughter turns her head completely to one side when she watches television. She watches out of one eye only. Her vision has been checked and vision in both eyes is good. However, this does not seem right. What could cause this?
Answer:
You are correct to be concerned. Children will adopt an abnormal face turn if it helps to improve their vision, and their vision may test as normal when checked. Problems that can be associated with an abnormal head posture include strabismus (misaligned eyes), nystagmus (constant shaking of the eyes), and refractive error (need for glasses) among others. It can also be caused by reduced hearing in one ear, tight neck muscles, or can even be due to a habit. A visit to an ophthalmologist is a good place to start looking for the cause.
