Question:
On May 5th 2009, my son was hit in the eye with a football during PE. The doctor said that the macula had been hit and that he had trauma to the retina which was bruised. He has trauma related macular degeneration. He cannot see out the central part of his left eye but can see out his peripheral. He still has 20/20 vision in his right eye. Are there any doctors that can correct this or help it?
Answer:
The injury sounds like it damaged the macula and caused swelling in the macula with resultant pigmentary changes. Only time will tell if there is visual recovery. There are no proven treatments to alter traumatic pigmentary change in the macula weeks after the injury. He should be followed for other changes that can cause decreased vision, including choroidal rupture, retinal tears and detachment and glaucoma.
It’s very important that your son wear protective eyewear when playing sports now to protect his good eye.
