Question:
Several years ago I was diagnosed with an eye infection that prevented me from wearing my contact lenses. I don't remember the name, but was told it is an infection of the eyelids. The symptoms include itching, burning, tearing, and general discomfort. I was also told there wasn't any treatment available and advised to stop wearing the contacts. Can you tell me what this might be and suggest a treatment?

Answer:
Based upon your description and your symptoms, your "eye infection" is probably blepharitis, a very common ongoing inflammation and low grade infection of the edges of the eyelids. Blepharitis may be treated by scrupulous eyelid hygeine, eye drops, eye ointments, and/or oral antibiotics such as doxycycline or minocycline. Ask an Eye M.D. to examine your eyelids and prescribe treatments. Many people with blepharitis are able to resume contact lens wear once the inflammation and infection have cleared.
