How long should I wait to see the doctor if my eyes secrete mucus matter and water?

Question:
I do have allergies, but I never had my eyes secrete mucus matter and water like they are doing for the past two days. I got some over the counter eye drops that have a antihistamine in it. It feels better, but how long should I wait to see my doctor, if it does not clear up?
Answer:
Eye allergies can cause itching, tearing, and redness of the eyes. If you have "mucus matter and water," you may have an infection of the conjunctiva (the membrane that lines the inside of your eyelids and covers the white parts of your eyes.) Many external eye infections, especially those caused by viruses, are self-limited. You should have an ophthalmologist examine your eyes if the discomfort and discharge last more than a few days.
