Question:
My nephew is 4 months old and he is not focusing. Do you know what could be the cause for this and how can we help him?

Answer:
I am assuming that by the term “not focusing” you mean that the baby does not appear to see.  There can be many reasons why a 4 month old baby does not appear to be focusing.  Sometimes, a baby who is otherwise normal simply fails to show obvious visual behavior until he is a bit older.  However, since most children do demonstrate obvious visual behavior by this age, there is cause for concern.  There is a long list of potential problems that can be the cause of a baby not focusing at age 4 months. The best way to determine if there is a problem and to determine what can be done about the problem is to have the baby examined by an Eye M.D.
