Question:
I have had ptosis or over 30 years. I am now 87 years of age. Are there more risks than benefits for eye surgery to correct the problem? Are there any options other than surgery to treat this?
Answer:
Ptosis surgery an be performed safely at any age. This procedure, performed by an ophthalmologist, tightens one of two muscles in the eyelid that are responsible for eyelid elevation. This procedure can be performed under a local anesthetic usually in less than one hour. If the ptosis is very severe, a suspender of tissue or a thread of silicone may need to be placed in the eyelid to help the brow elevate the eyelid. If you are having trouble seeing and performing your activities of daily living as a result of the droopy lid, it may be reasonable for you to consider a ptosis repair. Please discuss your particular health concerns with an ophthalmologist to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for this surgery.
