Is it possible to use different brand of eye drops on my prosthetic eye?
JAN 25, 2013
Question:
I have a prosthetic eye and I have been using the same eye drops (Alcon Enuclene) since I was 1 year old and I am currently 22 years old. I haven't ordered them in 6 months or so and now that I am completely out of drops I can't seem to locate this product anywhere. My eye is extremely dry and I need a drop I can trust. Do you have any suggestions?
Answer:
There are many options available to lubricate your prosthetic if needed. You may use artificial tears or Similasan. It appears that Enuclene is unavailable.
It is important to have your prosthetic polished yearly by an ocularist and to undergo a yearly exam of your socket by an ophthalmologist. If there are surface irregularities on the prosthetic or lining of the socket, you may require increased lubrication.
