Can my premature daughter's pseudomonas infection spread to her other eye?
JAN 11, 2013
Question:
My daughter was born moderately premature at 31 weeks. She got a pseudomonas infection in her left eye after two days. Her cornea bulged a lot and she underwent amniotic membrane surgery. However, her right eye looks clear, but I am worried that the infection can spread to the other eye at some point of time. Is that possible?
Answer:
Assuming that your daughter is now much older and is home from the hospital, there is no need to be concerned about her getting a pseudomonas infection in her uninvolved eye. If your daughter remains in an intensive care unit and remains very ill, she could still be at risk for eye infection involving her other eye. If this is the case, your child's neonatologist will know the steps to take to reduce the risk of eye infection.
