Why am I experiencing pain when I am nott wearing contacts?
MAR 10, 2014
Question:
When I took out my contact lenses the other night I experienced severe burning and pain. I woke up the feeling the same way. When I put the contacts back in, the pain and burning stops. It's been a couple of days now and the same thing happens. What can cause this?
Answer:
This sounds like a dryness of the eye problem. The cornea—the tissue upon which the lenses sit—may be tear-deficient. The symptoms on such a disturbed cornea are more severe when the lens is removed as the lids rub over the disturbed areas causing the symptoms you describe. There are other possibilities such as a lens fitting too tight and certain underlying illnesses, which can cause eye dryness. Check with your fitting ophthalmologist if these symptoms persist.
