Question:
After sustained periods of near work it feels as if a curtain is covering my right eye. What is it? Do I need glasses or something?
Answer:
A curtain over the vision may represent a number of things. Some are quite concerning like a vitreous or retinal detachment, occluded blood vessel, or blood inside the eye. A less serious cause could be related to sustained periods of near work, which can result in eye strain and blurred vision.
In order to focus for near vision, the eye needs to accommodate or increase the focusing power of the eye in order to see. After a sustained period of time, this accommodative focusing of the eye may have difficulty relaxing which may be causing the symptoms you're noticing in your right eye. It would be unusual, however, for this to only be present in one eye. If you are straining to read, glasses can usually help. You should discuss these symptoms with your ophthalmologist and seek appropriate treatment or glasses correction.
