Can Macular Pucker be Treated Without Surgery?

Question:
I have macular puckering retina. Can this be treated without surgery? What is involved?
Answer:
Macular pucker or epiretinal membrane cannot be treated without surgery. The surgical treatment involves vitrectomy surgery with three microsurgery incisions in the sclera and then removal of the vitreous gel followed by removal of the epiretinal membrane on the retinal surface. Sometimes this is combined with removal of another layer called the internal limiting membrane. In some cases, an air or gas bubble is placed into the vitreous cavity and some particular positioning is required postoperatively for some number of days.
