Are there any long term treatment options for macular edema?
FEB 21, 2014
Question:
My sister, 59 years old, was diagnosed with macular edema and thinning of the retina in both eyes over 5 years ago. Since that time cataracts have been removed and the lenses in her eyes have been replaced. Her doctor stated her condition was hereditary. Our mother had an uncle and an aunt who were both blind. My sister received five to six injections of steroids in the eye four years ago and they no longer work. Her eyesight is getting weaker. What treatments options are available?
Answer:
The first thing is to determine a definitive diagnosis. I suggest your family be examined by a retina specialist with experience in inherited retinal diseases. Once a diagnosis is established, treatment options can be discussed.
