Question:
I take the original AREDS formula. Can I also take Lutein 6 mg? I have read this might counteract the effectiveness of beta-carotene.
Answer:
The role of lutein in age-related macular degeneration remains to be determined. The only vitamin preparation that has been proven to have clinical benefit is the AREDS formula. Whether adding lutein to the AREDS formula is helpful or harmful is unknown. Currently, there is a National Eye Institute-sponsored clinical trial, AREDS 2, which is evaluating the role of lutein and omega fatty acids in AMD. The results will not be available for at least another year.
