Low Vision and Careers in Orthoptics
OCT 18, 2012
Question:
I am partially sighted and not able to drive due to my congenital nystagmus. I've had four strabismus operations to alleviate my eye shaking and my double vision. As a result of my eye condition, I've become interested in pursuing a career in orthoptics. With my low vision, can I learn how to do retinoscopy and refractometry?
Answer:
Unless you have a position of gaze in which vision is normal and this position would allow you to perform the tasks you describe, it is unlikely that you could become a successful practicing orthoptist.
