Are intrastromal rings (Intacs) a possible treatment for my keratoconus?

Question:

I have keratoconus on both eyes. In 2008 I had collagen cross-linking done but these days many doctors have told me about intrastromal rings (Intacs). I would like to know your opinion on this surgery.

Answer:

Intrastromal rings are being investigated for use in keratoconus and have shown some success. The purpose of these is to bolster and flatten the cornea and this has the effect of 1) improving the uncorrected vision; or 2) decreasing astigmatism enough to allow the patient to tolerate glasses; or 3) improving the fit and effectiveness of contact lenses. Currently these are available mostly under research protocols so you should look for a specialist that is experienced with this and is part of a study.
