Is there any treatment for congenital optic atrophy?
NOV 24, 2014
Question:
My son is suffering from congenital optic atrophy (a deterioration of the tissues in the back of the eye) in one eye due to birth asphaxia (when a baby's brain doesn't have enough oxygen during birth). Is there any surgical or medicinal treatment?
Answer:
Unfortunately, there is no available treatment for this condition. However, there are promising future technologies such as stem cell therapy (biological cells that can be adapted to treat disease and repair tissue) which may be developed over the next several years.
