Question:
Can retinal cysts be removed without removing the vitreous humor?
Answer:
Cysts usually are not a problem unless located near the macula (the part of the eye which allows for fine detailed vision such as reading). Some cysts can be treated or minimized by laser treatment but many will require surgery. The only access to the involved portions of the retina is through the vitreous (a clear, gel-like substance that fills the middle of the eye). Therefore, to accomplish such surgery, some or all of the vitreous must be removed to gain safe access.
