Do Prescriptions Add Weight to Optical Lenses?
MAR 10, 2014
Question:
Does an eye prescription add weight to the optical lens? I am nearsighted in my left eye and blind in right eye. Every time I get a new pair of glasses, BOTH lenses have the same prescription even though I have no vision in my right eye. The reason given is that the lenses would not be balanced for thickness and weight so the glasses would not fit properly on my face. The left lens would be heavy (with a prescription) and the right lens would be light (no prescription), making for an unbalanced pair of glasses. Is that true or false?
Answer:
The answer is literally true, but the need for a genuinely new "balance lens" in the blind eye would be unusual unless a frame change was also desired.
