Can astigmatism change after cataract surgery requiring a new toric lens?
MAR 12, 2014
Question:
I had cataract surgery nd received IOLs for astigmatism. Can the degree of astigmatism change enough to require future change of the implants over time? How much time?
Answer:
There are several causes of astigmatism, but in most cases of naturally occurring astigmatism, this corneal irregularity becomes stable as we mature and is not likely to significantly progress over time. There are exceptions to this as in keratoconus. Assuming you have a cataract of aging, your astigmatism is very likely to not change significantly over time and no additional surgery or further implants will ever be needed.
