What needs to be taken in considerations for cataract surgery on hypermature cataracts?
APR 25, 2013
Question:
I have a hypermature cataract and have heard that phacoemulsification risks having it shatter and fall back to the retina, and therefore, the old method of surgical removal is better. Is that so?
Answer:
The potential risks with a very dense cataract are definitely increased. However, with newer techniques, removal of the cataract tends to be easier with lower complication rates. I suggest asking your surgeon whether they have a lot of experience with very dense cataracts. With today's advanced technology of cataract surgery equipment and newer techniques, rarely is the old technique needed.
