Question:
What are the main problems with having cataract surgery after previously having LASIK?
Answer:
This is a good question that should be explored with the surgeon who plans to do cataract surgery. Routinely, the length of your eye is carefully measured before surgery, and this number and other factors are used in a formula to help select the optimal power of intraocular lens. This calculation can be more difficult in eyes that have had LASIK.
Another potential problem would be the use of a multifocal intraocular lens. These lenses provide vision up close and at intermediate and far distances, and some patients who have had prior LASIK have reported difficulties with these implants following cataract surgery.
And of course special attention must be paid to the LASIK "flap" and not disturbing it during cataract surgery.
