Is My IOP Reading High?
JUN 03, 2013
Question:
My eye pressure was measured at 25. Should I be concerned?
Answer:
When assessing the significance of elevated intraocular pressure, one needs to take into account many factors, including other ocular findings as well as general health considerations. Although a pressure reading of 25 mmHg is higher than average, your ophthalmologist—your ophthalmologist—will do a comprehensive examination of your eye looking at a variety of factors, including but not limited to the corneal thickness and the state of the optic nerves, and will possibly perform other ancillary testing such as peripheral visual field testing and more sophisticated imaging of your optic nerve. You should be commended for having had your eyes examined. But the next step is critical to make sure that the implications of this elevated eye pressure are understood and appropriately managed by an ophthalmologist. An ophthalmologist is uniquely qualified, as a trained physician who specializes in diseases of the eye, to assess and appropriately manage such conditions, taking into account your general health issues.
