What Causes Drusen in Younger People?
APR 04, 2013
Question:
I just found out I have drusen in my right eye. What causes them in younger people (I am 45)? I know high blood pressure affects them—is it possible that low blood pressure also affects or causes them? My normal reading is 87/62?
Answer:
Drusen are caused by changes in the cells that support the retina called the retinal pigment epithelium. There is no direct correlation with either high or low blood pressure. Drusen in younger people may be inherited or signify other macular disease. There are imaging tests that can be performed to determine the type of drusen and their prognosis.
