Question:
Does dermatochalasis influence traction on the retina?
Answer:
Dermatochalasis, defined as laxity of skin, does not put traction on the retina. If a patient has dermatochalasis of the eyelids, the skin may rest on or in front of the eyelid margin, leading to a decrease in the superior visual field. Traction of the retina, which is located inside the eye itself, can lead to a retinal detachment. If the detachment is superior, there may be a decrease in the superior visual field as well, but the presence of lax upper eyelid skin (dermatochalasis) does not induce retinal traction.
