Cystoid macular edema (or CME) is the clinical finding of swelling of the retina in the macular area. It can occur as the result of cataract surgery (complicated or uncomplicated), diabetes, retinal vascular occlusions, epiretinal membranes, and macular degeneration. It does not spread to the other eye. It is important that you see an ophthalmologist or a retina specialist (an ophthalmologist with additional training in retinal problems) to determine why you have CME.
