Question:
Are posterior subcapsular cataracts (PSC) often caused by steroid use? I have a left-eye PSC and took a lot of steroids for an orthopedic injury.
Answer:
Large enough doses of steroid medication that reach the bloodstream can increase the risk of developing cataracts over time. The most common type of cataract associated with steroids is the posterior subcapsular cataract. However, PSC cataracts can also occur in patients who have never taken steroids.
