I have vision loss from AMD, how will that affect my cataract surgery?

Question:
I am 79 years old and have lost central vision in one eye due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). I have cataracts and I can still read and drive in daylight. If surgery is done would it be just on the good eye or both?
Answer:
Cataract surgery can help the peripheral vision of the eye with AMD as well. You need to ask your surgeon if he thinks there is enough cataract there that removing it would help the peripheral vision, or at least even up the vision between the eyes optically. If one eye is left very near- or farsighted and the other is not, that can cause a focusing problem. Also, if you ever need the help of a low vision specialist, they will often insist that the cataract be removed first.
