Question:
Is it normal to prescribe extensive eye drops prior to and for four weeks after cataract surgery (up to 15 drops per day)?
Answer:
It is typical to prescribe a non-steroidal drop and antibiotics prior to the surgery; and then these in addition to a steroid drop after the surgery for at least two to four weeks. There are now some new drops (although more expensive) that can be used far fewer times a day. The drops are meant to protect against infection which can be devastating to the vision and to prevent inflammation which can delay healing.
