Can a person have cataract surgery if they are allergic to steroids?

Answer:
Steroid allergies are rare. Usually steroid drops are used following cataract surgery to control post-operative inflammation (swelling, redness, irritation). First I would want to know more about what the specific "allergy" is. Sometime people report allergies but what they are really having are reactions or side effects that are not true allergies. If there is a true allergy and one that would require not using steroid drops in the postoperative period, cataract surgery can still be performed. The post- operative inflammation tends to be self-limited (resolve on its own) and can also be treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drops.
