Can you have cataract surgery with a corneal abrasion?

Question:
Can you have cataract surgery with a corneal abrasion (a scratch or scrape on the cornea)?
Answer:
Yes, you can, but I don't recommend it. In general, a corneal abrasion is an acute injury to the eye and a cataract surgery (removal of the eye’s cloudy lens) is an elective procedure. You would want to be sure the corneal abrasion is healed before proceeding with elective cataract surgery. The exception is in the case of eye trauma, where you have a corneal abrasion but also damage to the eye's lens requiring emergency surgery to remove the lens.
