Can a tonopen give a reading as accurate as a Goldman's Applanation tonometer?

Question:
My eye pressure is 24 in one eye as measured at a health fair glaucoma screening using a tonopen (handheld instrument used to test for glaucoma). My next appointment with my ophthalmologist is in 10 months. Will that eye pressure cause any damage if I wait for 10 months? Can a tonopen give a reading as accurate as a Goldman's Applanation tonometer (pressure-reading device found in doctor’s office)?
Answer:
Tonopens can give accurate readings, especially in the normal range, but I prefer applanation. I can’t answer the question of whether it is safe to wait. Different people have differing reactions to elevated pressure, so I would relay the information from that screening to your ophthalmologist, and let them give you guidance as to your next follow-up visit.
