Question:
My son had retinoblastoma (a rare cancer of the eye) treatments as an infant and toddler. He is now 15 and struggling with low vision and unable to drive due to scar tissue in the central vision of the retina. Is there anything we can do to improve his sight or reduce the scar tissue?
Answer:
It is difficult to determine whether anything further can be done to help your son without examining him or reviewing his records. Unfortunately, most individuals with scarring from this treatment do not benefit from further surgery. However, low vision rehabilitation can often be quite beneficial to improve visual function and I would encourage this evaluation. Talk to his ophthalmologist about low vision resources.
