  • Can caffeine withdrawal affect your vision?

    Question:

I quit drinking coffee for two weeks and my vision started blurring. Today, I had my first cup of coffee and my eyesight has cleared up. Can caffeine withdrawal affect your vision?

    Answer:

There is a large study that showed there is an association of a type of glaucoma (pseudoexfoliation) that is associated with greater than three cups of coffee per day. This type of glaucoma can lead to visual loss. There are no reported effects of caffeine withdrawal causing visual loss, however, it is theoretically possible. Caffeine is a powerful stimulant. It may have effects on the tear film or other effects on the eye that are, as yet, not fully known. It is possible that you developed dry eye symptoms off caffeine but this is speculation. My feeling is that your vision and your caffeine use are unrelated and coincidental.
