  • What makes the skin area around the eyes black?

    Question:

What makes the skin area around the eyes black?

    Answer:

This pigment can be hereditary, hormonal, or the result of frequent swelling from allergy attacks. It can also be caused by some glaucoma medications or by a product that is prescribed to make the eyelashes grow. It is almost never harmful. Consult your ophthalmologist first to rule out any eye problems; if there are none, over-the-counter and prescription medications are available, but with limited results. In some cases, the color is due to breakage of small blood vessels under the eyelid skin, and regular application of ice bags may help.
