Do Bright Lights Make Occult Macular Dystrophy Worse?
MAR 20, 2014
Question:
I have occult macular dystrophy and want to know if the bright lights that bother my eyes are actually harming them by speeding up the degeneration of the cones (cells in the back of the eye that help us see colors).
Answer:
Occult macular dystrophy (OMD) is a rare condition associated with a specific gene, which causes a decline in visual sharpness over time. There is no definitive evidence that normal light levels can accelerate the disease. However, if you are having increasing problems with light sensitivity you should return to the ophthalmologist who made the diagnosis of OMD to determine if there is another cause for the light sensitivity.
