Question:
What do you think about adjustable-focus prescription eyeglasses which allow the wearer to adjust the focal distance of the lenses at any time while wearing the glasses? Do you recommend these glasses?
Answer:
I have no personal experience with these eyeglasses. The way these usually work is that it is a two-lens system. The front lens typically contains the patient’s distance prescription. The rear lens is adjustable and can add plus power by a variable adjustment. In theory there is nothing wrong with this idea. I am not sure if currently available products are well-accepted by patients. However, there is no harm in trying. Be sure to have a comprehensive eye exam by an ophthalmologist before purchase to be sure that your vision issues are just glasses-related and not due to disease. Also, you will want an up-to-date prescription to have these glasses made.
