Question:
Do our eyes get smaller as we age? also, what is the best way to cleanse and moisturize the area along the lids where the lashes join the lid. there seems to be a granular or flaky substance when this area is rubbed. It seems that many lashes that fell out did not grow back. I am 57 and do not use many "beauty" products, especially mascara and shadow.

Answer:
Our eyes do not get smaller as we age.  They can appear to become smaller because of drooping of the eyelid or overhanging upper eyelid skin and brow.  These problems can be fixed with cosmetic or functional eyelid surgery.  The flaking along the eyelid margins comes from secretions from oil secreting glands near the eyelash follicles. This is a condition called blepharitis. You can clean these flakes off with a dilute baby shampoo solution and cotton balls or a commercially available pretreated towelette.  Also warm compresses can help reduce these secretions.  Persistence or worsening of these symptoms requires evaluation by an Eye M.D. to rule out other conditions and perhaps treat with prescription drops and pills.
