Question:
During the night I have pain in my left eye and I am unable to open the eyelid without physically opening it with my fingers. It often happens if I fall to sleep prior to going to bed. Once the eyelid is open the pain is gone. The pain seems to start with the beginning of the spasm. I recall having it when I was a lot younger and deprived of sleep. I am 59 and female, have general good health, not overweight, but recently I have been fairly distressed.

Answer:
If you have had a previous injury to the involved eye, you may be suffering from a recurrent corneal erosion.  If your symptoms are mild, you could try an over-the-counter ophthalmic lubricating ointment at night to determine if this makes a difference.  If it does not help, or if your symptoms worsen, you should see your local ophthalmologist.
