Question:
My 7-year old was diagnosed with amblyopia at 6 and since then we have been patching. He wears the patches all day while in school. His writing is horrible and he complains about not being able to see some of the words he is learning how to read. I know boys usually don't like school; however, my question is, could some of this be related to his having the amblyopia? Is there anything we can do to help him?

Answer:
If your son’s amblyopia is severe, patching his sound eye could adversely affect his school performance.  A discussion with your child’s Eye M.D. would be a good first step to determine the level of visual impairment while patched and to explore other potential patching schedules that are less likely to interfere with school work.
