Dr. Melendez is a refractive surgeon and founder at Juliette Eye Institute in Albuquerque, NM. He is also Clinical Professor in the Department of of Ophthalmology at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center where he enjoys mentoring medical students and encouraging them to pursue a career in ophthalmology. He served on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Dermatologic and Ophthalmic Drugs Advisory Committee and is executive director of The Juliette RP Vision Foundation, which he founded to provide college scholarships for visually-impaired children and scholarships for ophthalmology residents interested in helping patients with retinitis pigmentosa in 2008. Dr. Melendez previously was section chief of ophthalmology at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M. He served as editor-in-chief of the website, Pearls in Ophthalmology, for five years. Dr. Melendez was former chair of the Academy's Young Ophthalmologist (YO) Committee. He is a graduate of the Academy's 2008 Leadership Development Program. He graduated from the UNM School of Medicine and completed his ophthalmology residency at The University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio, where he served as chief resident. He completed a master's in business administration at the Anderson School of Management at UNM, from which he received a Young Alumni Award. Dr. Melendez is also a Lt. Colonel in the New Mexico Air National Guard/USAF.
